Flashing lights, beautiful women and amazing clothes.

Independent fashion designers from across the province debuted their collections for seven days at Calgary’s first annual Alberta Fashion Week (AFW) Oct. 4 - 10.

Former Project Runway contestant, Adejoke Taiwo, was among them and debuted her spring/summer 2010 fashion line, Alala, on Oct 6.

Local fashionistas and media showed up for the seven day event to give their overwhelming support as models strutted her line down the glamorous runway of The Banke Lounge.

“All kinds of women can wear my clothing,” says Taiwo. “Mainly someone who wants to have an interesting piece added to their wardrobe or has a special place to go.”

Taiwo’s says her inspiration for this collection was season change, and the organics that go along with it, such as flowers blooming and new growth.

The line’s name mean’s dreamer in the Nigerian Yoruba language - where Taiwo’s inspiration originated.

Taiwo says she mixed African fabrics with westernized styles to create final pieces full of bold prints, contrasting shapes and easy to wear silhouettes.

“I really liked the fabrics and the cut of the clothing, and I really thought it accentuated the feminine form,” says SAIT student Jennifer Blezard, one of the spectators at Taiwo’s show.

Since Project Runway, Taiwo has managed to stay grounded due in part to her long-standing love affair with fashion.

“I’ve pretty much been into fashion my whole life, I like clothes…a lot,” she says. “My mom was a model and she would bring me to her shows, so I’ve always been around it.” A seamstress since age six, Taiwo sewed the clothing line in her basement.

The Art Gallery of Calgary will host its seventh annual fall fashion show on Nov. 6, where Taiwo will be showcasing her next fashion line for the event at ARTwear 2009.
