It just keeps getting better for Dan Mangan

The new year is off to an exciting start for Vancouver-based singer/songwriter, Dan Mangan. After wrapping up an Australian tour, Mangan headed to Los Angeles, where he recently performed at this year’s Grammy Awards showcase.

The experience was a first for Mangan and he found himself in the company of music’s biggest names, including Leonard Cohen and David Foster.
“It was a crazy night,” said Mangan. “I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into.”

Mangan’s career is steadily on the rise. His latest album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice has garnered a tremendous amount of positive feedback. The song, ‘Robots’ won two CBC Radio 3 Bucky Awards earlier this year for best song as well as best vocals.

Once his time in Los Angeles. comes to an end, Mangan will return Canada to perform during the Olympics, including a private show at the athlete’s village.

While his feelings towards to Olympics are mixed for political and economic reasons, Mangan is looking forward to the experience and is embracing the positive aspects of the event.

“The cultural Olympiads weren’t something that had to happen and it’s going to bring attention to a lot of starving artists,” said Mangan, who appreciates the effort put forth to involve the arts in the Games.

As Mangan’s career continues to flourish and grow, so does his music. “When I put out my first record, I was really just trying to see if I could make a record,” said Mangan. “It was more of an experiment.”

Mangan spent the next four years travelling and performing around the world. In that time period he said he grew up a lot, both musically and personally.

“I think I’m a little more comfortable in my own skin as a songwriter,” said Mangan. “I’m always trying to grow and learn and not get stuck in any one style.”

Mangan is anticipating his performance at The Gateway on Feb. 5 as he said he always has great experiences with Calgary audiences.

“After the last couple of shows, I’ve developed a bit of a love affair with the people of the city. I’m really excited to get back there.”

Tickets are available at MC107 and The Gateway.
