ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

Artists cross oceans to exchange unique art

Fifty-seven hand-picked international artists will be showcasing an array of contemporary fine art in Calgary.

Student art from 12 universities in Japan were selected, as well as art from ACAD, U of C, Burnt Toast Studio and the Alberta Printmakers Society.

Professor William Laing, one of the curators of the event, worked with professors from the Kyoto Studio in Japan to make the selections, and felt it would highlight the differences in printmaking between Canadian and Japanese students.

Liang said the exhibit, which was first shown in Kyoto in June 2009, was well received and anticipates the same response from Calgarians. “It’s truly amazing to see the diversity of the Canadian and Japanese students’ work,” said Laing.

Edwin Herrenschmidt, who graduated from ACAD’s printmaking department in 1996 and started Burnt Toast Studio in 2000, said the exhibit is something students don’t want to miss out on.

“It shows a great variety of art techniques from Calgary,” said Herrenschmidt. “The students from Calgary are really influenced by pop culture art, while the students from Japan seem to have more traditional pieces.”

Herrenschmidt said the artists use different techniques through print making like etching, woodcut, colograph, linocut, silk-screening and mixed media.

This is a great opportunity for art lovers to see something different, he said. “It’s an art form that doesn’t get a lot of recognition. It’s on the sidelines of the art world.”

The artists will be showcased until April 30, at the University Theatre Gallery and the Dean’s Gallery in Craigie Hall at the U of C. Admission is free.
