Andy Warhol cinema show
Economic entertainment options for students
While post-class drinks at the bar and late-night clubbing have become the go-to source of entertainment for college kids, Calgary’s art scene is thriving with numerous performance shows and art installations every night of the week.
With venues like Theatre Junction Grand offering great student discounts, attending a performance show is often a more economical choice than running up a bar tab at the neighbourhood pub.
According to Stephanie Orr, marketing and communications director at Theatre Junction Grand, this season is introducing a variety of performances that go beyond “traditional theatre.”
“We’re trying to reach out more to our student audience and get them in,” she says.
Kicking off its 2012-2013 season, Theatre Junction Grand presents 13 Most Beautiful… Songs For Andy Warhol’s Screen Tests from Sept. 19 until Sept. 22. This concert-influenced cinema show, features Warhol’s lesser-known screen tests accompanied by original music composed and performed by former Luna Brit-rockers Dean Wareham and Britta Philips.
In the mid-1960s, Warhol shot hundreds of short screen tests of the various people who visited his gallery—many of whom were famous A-listers at the time. Out of more than 500 different screen tests, Wareham and Philips chose 13 subjects to showcase, including American model and socialite Edie Sedgwick, famous Warhol muse Nico, and American rocker-songwriter Lou Reed (whose film is accompanied by a stellar cover of the Velvet Underground’s ‘Not a Young Man Anymore’).
Tickets are available through the Theatre Junction Grand box office at 403-205-2922 or can be purchased online at tickets.theatrejunction.com.
