Hey Ocean! powered by avocados, Care Bears and Paul Simon

Hey Ocean!Vancouver based trio Hey Ocean!, composed of lead vocalist Ashleigh Ball, guitarist David Beckingham and bassist Dave Vertesi, may battle it out when it comes to creating their sound, but the outcome results in nothing but positivity.

“We are all extremely different, it makes things crazy but also very rewarding,” said Vertesi.

Many may have heard Ball’s voice without realizing it.

The singer is as a vocal actress, lending her voice to television and film projects such as Care Bears, Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony.

Ball suffered a vocal injury earlier this month. Such circumstances come with the territory of being in an industry when one’s voice is used so often.

In an attempt to avoid permanent vocal damage the band took some time off for Ball to rest.  But even a well needed rest has its repercussions. Hey Ocean! had no choice but to cancel the eastern leg of the tour.

Social media has played an important part in the bands career especially in times like these.

Taking to Twitter and Facebook, Hey Ocean! has kept fans updated on Ball’s vocal status, as well as sending out apologies for the cancelled dates.

“Get well soon” posts are still coming in at a steady pace.

In earlier years the band felt pressure to classify themselves within one genre, now Vertesi describes Hey Ocean! as, “song writers.”

“We are upbeat indie rock that grew up listening to Paul Simon,” said Vertesi.

Now with a greater confidence, the trio knows what kind of sound they want and intend to stick to it.

If there is any pressure on the band it stems from introductions.

“It is about the pressure of introducing yourself properly,” said Vertesi comparing a person’s initial reaction of a band to an initial reaction of meeting a stranger.

“It’s not always about depth, sometimes first impressions are more important.”

Hey Ocean! plays the Gateway on Nov. 18.
