The SAIT Trojans outmuscled, outshot and, most importantly, outscored the Concordia Thunder 5-1 this past Saturday on home ice.

The play was back and forth in the first period until Trojans captain Jonathan Malin took a mindless penalty halfway through. After being the recipient of a heavy check before clearing the puck, Malin speared the opposing player, leading to a four-minute penalty.

SAIT keeper Adam Bartko made three key saves to keep his team from going down a goal as his squad managed to successfully stay even with a man down. Bartko was rewarded by his teammates shortly after when Corey Tyrell put the Trojans up 1-0.

The second period began with the goaltenders stealing the show, both making massive saves on each end. It wasn’t until an absolute bullet from SAIT’s Steven Turner overpowered Thunder net minder Richard Gagnon that the second period seal was broken.

The puck bounced in the crease allowing Joe Babey to clean up the garbage increasing the Trojan lead to 2-0.

The Trojans slowly began to dominate the play when team leading scorer Clinton Pettapiece banged the puck home after an ugly goalmouth scramble in front of the Thunder net.

Concordia finally made a game of it by connecting almost instantly when they went on the power play. Shortly after making the score 3-1, the Thunder almost made it a one goal game when they set off on a two on one, but were denied by Bartko.

The third period was the Trojans’ best, completely dominating Concordia, who looked tired and overwhelmed. Trojan forward Sam Mitchell helped seal the victory when he slid a tape to tape pass to Blayne Stevenson, who then scored. The Trojans showed no mercy as they continued to pepper Thunder goalie Gagnon who faced a total of 49 shots.

The next home game is Nov. 18 against the MRU Cougars.
