taboo Sex ShowWhile some may believe sex is no longer the taboo subject it once was 10 years ago, its very mention still makes a lot of people squirm.

For Jennifer McMahon, a SAIT digital graphics communication student, one of the most difficult things about sex is just talking about it. She may be shy, but she’s definitely willing to break out of her shell in hopes of becoming more sexually enlightened.

“I would be open to learn more, something new,” says McMahon.  “Intimacy is important and something that you need to work on. It doesn’t come naturally to everyone.”

Students like McMahon can learn more about ways to bone up on their sex ed by taking in the Calgary Taboo Sex show at Stampede Park Nov. 11 – 14.

Dr. Ruth Neustifter, a relationship expert, says one way to tap into your adventurous side in the bedroom is to experiment with new hardware.

“Sex toys offer a unique and pleasurable opportunity for us to explore playfulness, sexual communication and intimacy,” says Neustifter.

“They can also be wonderful for folks with mobility or sensation difficulties. They’re not a quick fix all by themselves, but they are powerful and fun tools.”

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Calgary Taboo Sex offers something for everyone, from the exhibitors selling everything from toys, video, and lingerie to world famous contortionist Visha Loo.

“It’s a great night out,” says Joe Papa, the show’s director.  “It’s almost like a frat party with toys.”
New this year is the launch of the Miss Taboo contest, which will include two fashion shows and one bikini contest.  Eliminations take place each night by audience vote, and the winner will be crowned Nov. 14.

The show itself creates a non-threatening atmosphere in which the more introverted members of the public are able to comfortably check out the sexual hardware and videos.

The shy need not be discouraged by all the “taboo” elements that the show’s reputation highlights. Seminars on romance, intimacy, and how to improve your sex life are also included free with entry.
